Quantum Dots or OLEDs – Which Technology Will Dominate the TV Market of the Future?

February 16, 2017 // By Ross Young, Bob O’Brien and Yoshio Tamura
Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) currently dominate the display industry in all applications, as the continuous performance improvements, cost reductions, and flexibility of this technology has vanquished all the display technologies that preceded it. Although OLEDs have emerged in recent years, especially in smart phones but also in TVs, LCDs continue to improve. However the recent introduction of Quantum Dot technology to enable Wide Color Gamut (WCG), coupled with technologies driving High Dynamic Range (HDR) has allowed the highest-performance LCDs to equal the performance of OLED TV in some areas, and surpass it in others. This White Paper will explore the battle between Quantum Dot (QD) LCD and OLED, with a specific focus on television, the largest market for displays in value.
