12Gb/s SAS Flash manager enables high-performance SSDs for cloud servers

PMC has announced a 12Gb/s SAS Flash manager (SFM-12G) for the next wave of enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), claimed to be the first end-to-end 12Gb/s SAS solution from the protocol controller to the SSD controller.

The PM8304 SFM-12G enables more than 300,000 I/Os per second (IOPS) in a 2.5” SAS SSD, more than double the performance of today's 6Gb/s SAS SSDs. When paired with the industry’s highest performing protocol controller, the SPCv 12G, cloud server and big data storage manufacturers can deliver a stunning 2.4 million IOPS in an eight-drive, enterprise-class flash subsystem.

The PM8304 SFM-12G combines the manufacturer's proven 12Gb/s SAS technology with the industry’s lowest latency and innovative maxLIFE adaptive error correction, enabling storage equipment and drive manufacturers to deliver true enterprise-class SSDs. Historically, SSD controllers had to trade off latency, a key benefit of NAND, against life expectancy, a key requirement for enterprise systems. PMC’s maxLIFE technology solves this dilemma by extending the usable life of SSDs and maintaining the lowest error-correction latency over the life of the drive. This new technology allows OEMs to take advantage of the substantial economic benefits of MLC flash without compromising enterprise-class durability.

The development platform for i.MX 6Quad from element14 (built to the Freescale SABRE Lite design) is an evaluation platform featuring the powerful i.MX 6Q, a multimedia application processor with Quad ARM Cortex-A9 cores at 1.2 GHz from Freescale Semiconductor.

This month, Freescale and element14 are giving away five such platforms, worth £128.06 each, for EETimes Europe's readers to win. The platform helps evaluate the rich set of peripherals and includes a 10/100/Gb Ethernet port, SATA-II, HDMI v1.4, LVDS, parallel RGB interface, touch screen interface, analog headphone/microphone, micro TF and SD card interface, USB, serial port, JTAG, camera interface, and input keys for Android.

And the winners are...

In our previous reader offer, Pico Technology was giving away one of its recently launched PicoScope 3207B, a 2-channel USB 3.0 oscilloscope worth 1451 Euros. Lucky winner Mr L. Sanchez-Gonzalez from Spain should be receiving his PicoScope 3207B soon. Let's wish them some interesting findings with his projects.
