Bluetooth builds its future on v. 3.0

MUNICH, Germany — Despite a dip in Bluetooth-enabled shipments, market researcher iSuppli sees a bright future for Bluetooth, driven by its recently published high-speed version 3.0.

In 2009, the recession leaves its traces on the Bluetooth market: According to iSuppli, it is bound to shrink by 4 percent as a consequence of slow consumer sales, the market researcher says.

Nevertheless, the future looks bright for the RF data technology. Until 2013, the market for Bluetooth semiconductors will approach $4 billion. Unfortunately, the market researcher fails to specify from which level. Nevertheless, the iSuppli experts put their hope on version 3.0 announced as standard past April. With its support for high-speed data transfer, this specification allows to move large multimedia data files at a speed similar to WiFi, said iSuppli analyst Brian O'Rourke. The low data transfer has been a major stumbling block for the acceptance of earlier Bluetooth standards in the Consumer Electronics market.

For 2010, iSuppli expects shipments of Bluetooth-enabled devices to rebound. By 2012, Bluetooth 3.0 will represent the largest share of Bluetooth-related semiconductor revenue. And already in 2009, 63 percent of all new mobile handsets will be equipped with Bluetooth. Radio integration, using Bluetooth as the wireless platform, continues to gain serious market momentum, iSuppli says.

READER OFFER

This month Keithley Instruments is giving away two of its Model 2200 power supplies, worth 735 Euros each, for EETimes Europe's readers to win. The Model 2200-20-5: 20V, 5A, 100W on offer is one of five general-purpose programmable DC power supplies recently launched by the company, designed for source measurement instruments for component, module, and device characterization and test applications.

Part of the Series 2200 family, the unit’s voltage output accuracy is specified at 0.03% and its current output accuracy is 0.05%. The supply’s high output (1mV) and measurement (0.1mA) resolution makes it well-suited for characterizing low power circuits and devices in applications such as measuring idle mode and sleep mode currents to confirm devices can meet today’s ever-more-challenging goals for energy efficiency.

And the winners are:

In our previous reader offer, EPC was giving away ten of its EPC9002 development board kits, worth USD 95 each.
Lucky winners include  I. Blythe and C. Hardman from the UK, M. Casartelli and D. Cogliati from Italy, C. Cossio from Spain, W. Milarch from Germany, r. Milewicz from Poland, M. Prascak from Slovakia, A. Raidl from Austria and M. Taslakov from Bulgaria.
All should be receiving their kits soon. Let's wish them some interesting findings with their projects.
