The new device seems to have beaten Apple to the market with a curved device.  Similar technology was rumoured to be a feature of the iPhone 6 that is expected to be launched later this month.

The Galaxy Note Edge, which is a phone with a screen that curves around the phone on its right hand side, is equipped with a wraparound screen that is aiming to change the way users are able to control their phones by providing quick access to frequently used apps, alerts and device functionality.

The curved screen features 5.6 inch (141.9 mm) Quad HD+ Suiper AMOLED display that can present notifications at the top and bottom while viewing a video without disruption.   The Galaxy Note Edge release date has yet to be confirmed but is expected to be in October 2014.

With Galaxy Note Edge, Samsung offers a practical use for the curvature of its flexible AMOLED technology because while the main screen remains flat the right edge extends and curves until it reaches the back to create a side display where information such as weather and time can be seen from the side when the phone is laid on a table or desk.  The curved side display also enable the phone’s camera functions to be more like a stand-alone, point-and-shoot camera, with the shutter button and other functions appearing on top when the phone is held horizontally.

The device’s side display will also provide one-tap access to apps typically found on home screens of conventional smartphones.

At IFA 2014 in Berlin Samsung also unveiled a virtual-reality headset called Gear VR.
