Cobham Wireless, the former wireless test business of test equipment provider Aeroflex, sells its existing PXI (PCI Extensions for Instrumentation) modular instruments hardware product line to NI. In turn, NI provides PXI technology to Cobham; actually NI will become NI’s primary PXI technology provider. NI will continue to manufacture the instrument family acquired by Cobham and sell these products exclusively to them. Thus, the continuity of these products is ensured; the same holds true for the support to the customers. In addition, both companies agreed to collaborate the latest PXI modular instruments from NI, including NI’s vector signal transceiver with LabView FPGA (which by the way comes from Xilinx).

The agreement makes Cobham a part of the NI partner network, and even more – Cobham will become NI’s global preferred partner for cellular and connectivity applications. According to NI, the application spectrum will be relevant across the entire wireless test spectrum. Examples are testing antennas for cellphones or tests in the upcoming 5G mobile network technologies.

NI claims that by using the PXI approach and thus a software-defined modular technology for measurements, user companies can reduce test costs, shorten test times and adapt flexibly to test requirements. Through the partnership between Cobham and NI, customers can benefit from the latter’s expertise and support in cellular and connectivity test applications with systems bases on modular PXI systems.
