Dutch government pushes for PUFs in smartphones

The SBIR is a collaboration between the Netherlands’ government and local entrepreneurs to bring to market innovative products and services that solve important social problems.

Furthermore, Intrinsic-ID was one of six companies awarded funds as part of Phase II of the SBIR Cybersecurity initiative and competed against 72 other proposals as part of Phase I.

Bring Your Own Security (BYOS), aims to turn a standard smartphone into a universal, two-factor authentication device with the use of Intrinsic-ID’s proprietary Physically Unclonable Function (PUF) technology, also known as Hardware Intrinsic Security (HIS).

Dr. Pim Tuyls, CEO of Intrinsic-ID declined to comment on whether this implied that the Dutch government together with other industrial partners would backup financially the development of a proprietary secure smartphone, but he admitted that winning this procurement went beyond a pure endorsement of his technology.

“There is definitely a design-win behind this announcement, which we can’t disclose at the moment”, he told eeNews Europe.

The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) is responsible for implementation of SBIR Cybersecurity II, which makes a total of € 1.2 million available to the winners (up to € 200,000 each) spread over the next year and a half.

For now, the Intrinsic-ID project being funded essentially uses Intrinsic-ID’s PUF-based HIS technology to make a standard cell phone act as a security token, relying on a software implementation to read the hardware’s properties.

But ideally, Intrinsic-ID would want to enter the smartphone market either through licensing its software technology directly to smartphone OEMs, or through IP block licensing for a smartphone processor vendor to integrate its solution in hardware.

Other recent design wins include a cooperation with low-power FPGA vendor Microsemi, and a joint announcement with Athena Group to deliver cryptography microprocessor IP core under the name Dragon-QT.

All announcements share a wide application area for data encryption and security, from IoT to government, and from tiny wearables to smart meters, medical devices, and traffic lights.

In addition, Intrinsic-ID will develop the Saturnus Security Framework software development kit (SDK), which will enable software developers to create secure applications such as secure cloud access, secure enterprise network access, mobile payments, banking and authentication in general.
