The three-month average of global chip sales in January was $28.53 billion, an increase of 8.7 percent from the equivalent figure a year before. The global growth was down slightly from the previous month when the three-month average for December – a proxy for the 4Q14 absolute chip sales – was up 9.3 percent over the previous year’s figure.

However regional fortunes varied greatly. While January 2015 averaged sales to the Americas region were up 16.4 percent compared with the same period a year before in Europe the market was smaller by 0.2 percent and the Japanese market contracted by 8.0 percent. The Asia-Pacific region, which represents more than half the global market grew by 10.7 percent.

Monthly data is given by the SIA as a three-month average, although the WSTS organization tracks actual monthly data. The SIA and other regional semiconductor industry bodies opt to use averaged data because it evens out the actual data that typically show troughs at the beginnings of quarters and peaks at the ends of quarters.

"After a record-setting 2014, the global semiconductor industry is off to a promising start to 2015, posting its highest-ever January sales led by impressive growth in the Americas market,” said John Neuffer, president and CEO, Semiconductor Industry Association, in a statement. “Global sales have increased on a year-to-year basis for 21 consecutive months and remain strong across most regions and product categories."
