The GSENSE400-BSI is a 2,018 by 2,048 pixel sensor that is being manufactured for Gpixel (Changchun, China) by specialty foundry Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (Migdal Haemek, Israel) using its TS18IS manufacturing process, as was theGpixel’s record -breaking 150-megapixel full frame CMOS image sensor, the GMAX3005.

GSENSE400 comes with an anti-reflective coating for either UV sensitivity or visible light (VIS) sensitivity and features dark currents of below 0.03 e-/p/s at -50 degrees Celcius. The sensor is suitable for spectrometry, biometric, fluorescence, surveillance, industrial inspection, forensic, and astronomy applications.

Gpixel’s BSI scientific CMOS sensor features a sensitivity optimized for 270nm to 300nm wavelength light for its UV-optimized version, and from 300nm to 400nm wavelengths for its VIS-optimized version.

"I believe this is one of the most unique CMOS products currently available in the market and will create very serious competition with many existing BSI CCD sensors," said Xinyang Wang, founder and CEO of Gpixel, in a statement issued by Tower.

"We have known Dr. Wang for many years and have full confidence in his ability to grow his company to become a major high end CMOS image sensor supplier," said Avi Strum, general manager of the CMOS image sensor business unit at Tower, in the same statement. "Gpixel is unique in the Chinese market as it concentrates on the high end market which fits very well with our strategy."

The UV-optimized and VIS-optimized GSENSE400-BSI image sensors are available in sample quantities and are planned to be in production in Q3 2015.
