Industry group aims to strengthen OLED competitiveness
OLYMP stands for "Organic Light emitting sYstems based on energy- and cost-efficient Materials and Processes". In this project, companies such as Merck KGaA, BJB GmbH, LEDON, and Trilux are bringing in their respective expertise to improve the technological properties of OLEDs. Project coordinator is Osram Opto Semiconductors. Research is being specifically carried out to achieve efficiency values greater than 100 lm/W and to increase operational lifetimes. OLED, in the mid-term, should become as efficient as related LED technology and in the long term OLED should also be pliable and as transparent as glass panels. "We want to offer customers OLEDs that have superior energy efficiency compared to traditional light sources," says Ulrich Eisele, head of the OLED sector at Osram.
Current OLED panels are too expensive for general lighting. Manufacturing costs intended to be reduced by new forms of materials among other factors are essential conditions that determine prices.
The industry group follows an approach that covers the entire value chain, from organic materials to OLED panels and finished luminaires. Merck KGaA contributes its expertise in organic functional materials. Base-lamp holder concepts are being researched by BJB while LEDON is developing highly integrated modules win which OLED panels are equipped with driver electronics. Trilux contributes the development of OLED-based luminaries.
The OLYMP project is funded in part by the German Federal Research Ministry. Results are expected by early autumn 2015.
