LG prepares to manufacture flexible OLED displays

According to reports from various internet sources, Korean consumer electronics vendor LG plans to manufacture flexible OLED displays. The relatively small displays are intended to be used in a new range of mobile devices.


The sources unanimously suggest that LG will use a different manufacturing process than competitor Samsung which has announced a flexible OLED technology called Youm. The company plans to set up a 3.5-generation manufacturing site designed to produce displays based on a flexible plastic substrate. LG will spend 176 million US dollars to equip the production line. Production ramp up is expected not before end of the current year. The company already manufactures flexible displays based on the e-ink technology. 


The flexible OLED displays are expected to be more robust than available glass-based displays. In addition, they might feature a longer operating lifetime expectancy.
