NXP Q2 profit collapses, outlook remains cautious

July 22, 2008 | | 209400373
NXP Semiconductors has seen more or less flat sales in the second quarter, accompanied by a significant decline of the operating profit. The outlook for the quarter ahead is cautious at best.
MUNICH, Germany — NXP Semiconductors saw flat sales in the second quarter, accompanied by a significant decline of the operating profit. The outlook for the quarter ahead is cautious at best.

The company reported sales of $1.524 billion, a slight decline of .9 percent against the same period a year ago and a minimal increase of .33 percent against Q1/2008. The EBITDA earnings figure which excludes the effects of Purchase Price Accounting, declined by about 40 percent against the same period last year and reached a value of $114 million.

The figures reflect the continuing softness of the overall market, the company said in a press release. At the same time, the company pointed out that the results are in line with guidance. In particular, the company saw strong demand for digital TV products as a consequence of ramp-ups with Philips and a design win with German TV manufacturer Loewe AG. Analog TV chip sales, in contrast, continued their decline. The company also could cash in on design wins in 3G, EDGE and Ultra Low Cost phones with Samsung.

Nevertheless the factory loading declined to 78 percent in the second quarter, down from 87 percent in the previous quarter. In the comparable quarter of the past year, however, factory loading also was low with only 74 percent.

In contrast to market researchers, the company expects the soft demand to continue. For the quarter ahead, NXP expects a sales decrease in the mid single digit percentage range.

READER OFFER

This month Keithley Instruments is giving away two of its Model 2200 power supplies, worth 735 Euros each, for EETimes Europe's readers to win. The Model 2200-20-5: 20V, 5A, 100W on offer is one of five general-purpose programmable DC power supplies recently launched by the company, designed for source measurement instruments for component, module, and device characterization and test applications.

Part of the Series 2200 family, the unit’s voltage output accuracy is specified at 0.03% and its current output accuracy is 0.05%. The supply’s high output (1mV) and measurement (0.1mA) resolution makes it well-suited for characterizing low power circuits and devices in applications such as measuring idle mode and sleep mode currents to confirm devices can meet today’s ever-more-challenging goals for energy efficiency.

And the winners are:

In our previous reader offer, EPC was giving away ten of its EPC9002 development board kits, worth USD 95 each.
Lucky winners include  I. Blythe and C. Hardman from the UK, M. Casartelli and D. Cogliati from Italy, C. Cossio from Spain, W. Milarch from Germany, r. Milewicz from Poland, M. Prascak from Slovakia, A. Raidl from Austria and M. Taslakov from Bulgaria.
All should be receiving their kits soon. Let's wish them some interesting findings with their projects.
