The company claims that the OLED panel has a luminous efficacy of 100 lumens per watt and a life of 40,000 hours, nearly double that of competitors.

The OLED panel is scheduled to be released in November 2014 is designed to compete with fluorescent panels (100 lumens per watt, 20,000 hours) and LED lights (at least 100 lumens per watt, 50,000 hours).

Unlike LED light panels, OLED panels do not require additional parts like light-guiding plates or radiant heat panels, reducing their cost and making them easier to install. LG Chem point out that the OLED panel is one-tenth the thickness and about one-fifth the weight of an LED light.  The OLED lights weigh 20 percent lighter than LED lights.

The company entered the OLED lighting panel business in 2008 and began mass production in 2010 at its plant in Ochang, North Chungcheong.

The company cited its development of an OLED lighting engine, a module-type product with an operational driver, in OLED panels. The OLED lighting engine will be available commercially in the near future.

LG Chem plans to target new product at the world’s two largest lighting markets – North America and Europe.  Another target will be automotive applictions which account for about 20 percent of the total lighting market.  LG Chem says the the company is currently developing OLED panels for rear lamps in partnership with Japanese and European automakers by 2017 with the aim to capture about 20 percent of the market.
