New embedded systems and applications are continually demanding the development of highly robust microcontrollers (MCUs) that deliver higher performance and lower power consumption. A key element of this drive is the development and integration of new embedded non-volatile memory technology. Currently, the dominant non-volatile memories used in microcontrollers are Flash and EEPROM, but there are a growing number of alternative technologies that offer the same basic functionality.
