TRW launches its largest R&D centre - in China

Automotive supplier TRW Automotive Holdings has opened an R&D centre in China. The fact that the company places its largest technology centre in the Middle Kingdom provides a clear hint where TRW expects further growth.
TRW's new technology centre in Anting offers 66.000 square metres (710.000 spare feet) of floor space - enough to host more than 20 scientific test laboratories for TRW's most important focus topics. These are brake and steering systems, suspension, passive safety and safety electronics as well as the related sensors. At the site, TRW will offer more than 1200 jobs in fields such as R&D, construction, software development as well as test and validation. In addition, the company will offer technical support to its customers from its Anting site.
At the opportunity of the opening ceremonies, TRW CEO John C. Plant said that he expects the number on vehicles on China's roads to double by 2020. The increasing traffic density will put safety technology in the focus of the demand, he said, adding that he believes the company is well positioned to serve the need of the Chinese automotive industry with a product spectrum ranging from electrical brake and steering systems to partially automated driving functions.
Other western automotive suppliers like Bosch or Continental also run large R&D sites in China, addressing the huge countries insatiable hunger for individual mobility. Also more or less all semiconductor vendors involved in the automotive business, from Freescale to Infineon, have such activities in China.
