LG Electronics is the world’s second largest TV maker after and the company’s affiliate LG Display Co Ltd is the only panel maker that can mass produce OLED TV panels. Both companies are the biggest proponents of the technology for the TV market. The LG companies claim OLED offers better picture quality and consumes less power than mainstream liquid crystal displays (LCD) by OLED TVs remain more expensive than LCD televisions.

Some Chinese TV makers like Skyworth Digital Holdings Ltd and Konka Group Co Ltd are using OLED technology while in 2014 Sony Corp of Japan said it would be open to using OLED displays for its televisions but so far LG has not revealed who the proposed partners will be.

In Japan both Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. have made attempts to develop large-screen OLED TVs but manufacturing difficulties have ruled out a serious commercial introduction so far from the two Japanese giants. In 2007 Sony became the first company to sell an 11-inch OLED TV but never managed to upgrade to larger models cost effectively. Last month Panasonic demonstrated an OLED TV prototype at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA.

The adoption of quantum dot technology, which offers many of the benefits of OLED, is threatening to undercut global OLED TV sales because quantum dot provide a lower cost solution.

While LG says the company plans to roll out at least five new models of its OLED TVs in 2015, the world’s largest TV maker, Samsung says the company has no plans to make OLED TVs in the immediate future because company insists the technology is not yet ready for mass consumption.

In Seoul, Korea LG Electronics unveiled the company’s 2015 global TV lineup, including 55-, 65-, and 77-inch models with curved and flat screens. The company also introduced its ABCD concept to encapsulate the main benefits of the company’s cutting-edge OLED display technologies:

Angle (A) : LG OLED TVs assure that even viewers sitting off-center will enjoy exceptional picture quality.

Black (B) and Color (C) : The OLED lineup incorporates several advanced display features, including LG’s proprietary WRGB OLED technology. This ensures images are rendered with perfect blacks, striking colors and infinite contrast ratio.

Design (D) : LG’s Art Slim design philosophy focuses on creating the slimmest TV possible while keeping the overall aesthetic simple and clean.

While unveiling the new models LG also announced what the company termed its DUAL PREMIUM strategy to focus on the premium TV market with its new TV lineup with the aim of securing a leading position in the global premium TV market with OLED TVs while simultaneously expanding the size of the premium TV segment to create more opportunities for the company’s new PRIME UHD TVs.

LG’s PRIME UHD TV, which is a tier above the company’s ULTRA HD TV, boasts features such as ColorPrime technology, ULTRA Luminance, 4K In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel and Prime Mastering Engine to offer a truly premium, cinema-like experience. LG’s ColorPrime technology magnifies the range of colors that can be displayed on screen by utilizing different LED phosphor colors, creating greater image depth and realism. ULTRA Luminance technology continuously analyzes the brightest and darkest parts of the displayed content in order to improve brightness and resolution. Equipped with LG’s 4K IPS panel, the TV renders detailed images at extremely wide viewing angles. The Prime Mastering Engine optimizes the settings of the TV to boost picture quality to premium levels.

In addition, LG’s PRIME UHD TV (Model 55UF9500) comes with the 8.5 mm UltraSlim Design display in an industry where competing displays are between 40 and 50 mm in depth.

LG Electronics plans to launch the premium TVs in overseas markets beginning at the end of March 2015.
