Wind River pools avionics, automotive VxWorks platforms

September 02, 2010 | Christoph Hammerschmidt | 222903529
Embedded system software vendor Wind River has announced to combine its separated safety critical software platforms for avionics and automotive into one product. At the same time, the company updates its VxWorks MILS platform, accommodating support for Linux as a guest operating system.

The company hitherto sold two versions of its software for safety critical applications – one certified according to avionics software standard DO-178B, the other one according to IEC61508 which is more in use in the automotive industry. The combined version is now available under the product name Cert Platform. It introduces support for C++ and real-time processes; according to Wind River it provides more flexibility for designers and programmers and enables improved compatibility with imported or reused code.

In combining these software platforms, Wind River says it intends to directly address increasing demand for real-time operating systems with commercial off-the-shelf safety certification evidence across multiple market segments, including aviation and automotive as well as industrial control, medical and energy. In this market segments more rigorous certification processes and methods are required in order to ensure system safety.

Besides support for C++ and real-time processes, the Cert Platform includes the current Wind River Workbench development tools suite. COTS certification evidence for RTCA DO-178B and IEC 61508 is provided in a separate DVD.

In a separate release, Wind River announced an update of its VxWorks MILS platform which serves the needs of customers developing high-security, high-assurance applications. The current version 2.1 of the platform features a high-security networking stack which is regarded as a critical component for cross-domain solutions and multilevel secure connected devices. The main feature however is support for Wind River Linux as a guest operating system under VxWorks. On top of this, the platform offers support for partner software technologies such as Ada, DDS and Java. It also features a high Assurance Environment designed for EAL 6+ user components such as applications, middleware and drivers.

READER OFFER

This month Keithley Instruments is giving away two of its Model 2200 power supplies, worth 735 Euros each, for EETimes Europe's readers to win. The Model 2200-20-5: 20V, 5A, 100W on offer is one of five general-purpose programmable DC power supplies recently launched by the company, designed for source measurement instruments for component, module, and device characterization and test applications.

Part of the Series 2200 family, the unit’s voltage output accuracy is specified at 0.03% and its current output accuracy is 0.05%. The supply’s high output (1mV) and measurement (0.1mA) resolution makes it well-suited for characterizing low power circuits and devices in applications such as measuring idle mode and sleep mode currents to confirm devices can meet today’s ever-more-challenging goals for energy efficiency.

And the winners are:

In our previous reader offer, EPC was giving away ten of its EPC9002 development board kits, worth USD 95 each.
Lucky winners include  I. Blythe and C. Hardman from the UK, M. Casartelli and D. Cogliati from Italy, C. Cossio from Spain, W. Milarch from Germany, r. Milewicz from Poland, M. Prascak from Slovakia, A. Raidl from Austria and M. Taslakov from Bulgaria.
All should be receiving their kits soon. Let's wish them some interesting findings with their projects.
