The company was founded in October 2010 by Jacques Doremus and Patrick Radisson, both previously with the Thales group, with the support of the French CEA (Atomic Energy Commission).

The company has developed a sensor the ME100 based on CdTe and CdZnTe crystal material. This together with a signal conditioning ASIC and high-speed front-end electronics is capable of measuring the energy of each incident x-ray photon. MultiX supplies complete x-ray detector systems as upgrades to in-the-field x-ray systems to improve performance.

This in turn allows airport operators to improve checkpoints by reducing the need to divest liquids and laptops from travellers’ hand baggage while meeting security regulations.

The company said the money would be used to develop production capability and to launch a next generation of x-ray detectors to customers in aviation security, food quality control and waste sorting industry. The funding was provider by ACE Management, Amorçage Technologique Investissement, CEA Investissement, EurekaP, Expansinvest, Rhône-Alpes-Création and Thales Corporate Ventures, as well as from banking partners BPI and BNP.

"The company refined its products and its strategy allowing it to be today in the validation phase with the all the major actors of the x-ray system market," said Gilles Daguet, managing director at ACE Management, in a statement issued by MultiX. "Furthermore, the regulatory pressure makes MultiX one of the only companies to be able to offer a detector in compliance with the requirements of this sector," he added.

Jacques Doremus, CEO and founder of MultiX, said: "The ability to identify materials including explosives with a significant reduction of the false alarm rate when compared to current x-ray detectors has been validated. The multi-energy technology offers us a big growth potential."
