In a completely connected automotive world, vehicles, traffic lights and the traffic infrastructure in general are communicating among each other, enabling a much better traffic flow and safer rides, visionaries predict. To turn their vision into reality, automotive supplier Bosch, network equipment manufacturer Huawei and mobile carrier Vodafone have joined forces for a field test on a real-world Autobahn – a stretch of the A9 between Nuremberg and Munich in Germany. LTE-V2X as the underlying radio technology will establish enable direct and instantaneous exchange of data between vehicles, the group says. In the context of the test, vehicles transmit speed, position and highway lane data directly to all other vehicles in a perimeter of 320 meters. Since the data is transmitted and received directly between the vehicles involved, there is no delay, the group claims.
At the test course, Vodafone is installing an optimized wireless network for the data transfer. Technology provider Huawei is developing the mobile radio modules for the vehicles and installs the communication modules required in the base units. Bosch is integrating the mobile radio modules and related software in the vehicles; in addition, the company is responsible for the measurements.
During the test, the consortium intends to demonstrate that direct communications between vehicles via mobile radio is viable and exhibits very low latency. In addition, the tests are intended to investigate how LTE-V2X differs from the competing IEEE 802.11p technology. The support through the overarching mobile wireless network id believed to maximize reliability and to facilitate coordinating the communication between vehicles.
LTE-V2X is currently undergoing finalization of its specs in various international bodies. The consortium of Bosch, Huawei and Vodafone is using the latest version of the LTE-V2X spec, for the first time in Europe.
