Cambridge adds MCU to gas sensor for mobiles

Cambridge CMOS Sensors has launched a digital product in its CCS800 family of gas sensors and is aiming the product at smartphones, wearables and connected home devices.

The CCS811 integrates metal-oxide gas sensor, suitable for detecting alcohol and hazardous gases, with a microcontroller subsystem and which can simplify development and perform more local processing to reduce communications.

The sensor is based on a proprietary micro-hotplate technology that enables fast cycle times and a reduction in average power consumption compared with traditional metal oxide gas sensors, the company claims.

It is suitable for detecting gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds The sensor is the same as that used in the CCS801 (see Cambridge startup launches gas sensor for mobiles ) and the MCU is an 8-bit 8051from Silicon Labs in die form (the C8051F996-GDI). The integrated MCU manages the sensor drive modes and measurements and provides eCO2 levels and total VOC indication without any host intervention.  

The CCS811 comes in a 10 lead 2.7mm by 4.0mm, 0.6mm pitch LGA package suitable for space-constrained portable applications. The 10k unit price for the CCS811 is $5.82. Customer evaluation kits are available now for CCS811 with Windows-based software for sensor measurements and logging results.
