Free embedded, IoT courses offered online

August 25, 2016 // By Peter Clarke
Online professional learning provider EIT Digital SA (Brussels, Belgium) has launched additional free courses aimed at electronic engineers on its Coursera education platform.

The courses are: Embedded Hardware and Operating Systems, Automata and Behavioral Equivalences, and Architecting Smart Internet of Things Devices.

Automata and Behavioral Equivalences  is, according to Klabbers, a more theoretical course on system behavior with the aim to validate systems.  Embedded Hardware and Operating Systems  deals with the basic embedded systems on hardware and operating systems and the foundations of the embedded systems and Internet of Things in general. Architecting Smart IoT Devices  is the last of three 'introduction to Internet of Things' courses that EIT Digital developed in cooperation with iMinds. 'Architecting Smart IoT Devices' and 'Software Architecture for the Internet of Things' were launched earlier this summer.

EIT Digital is supported by the European Union and the courses are offered for free. A certificate showing successful completion costs €50 per course.

European universities were actively involved in developing these courses. Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the partners.

"If you can complete these courses you have the capacity to become a Master in Embedded Systems. Generally, such a Masters degree gives you access to world-renowned companies like ASML, NXP, Philips, Siemens, Nokia, etc," said Martijn Klabbers, who works on EIT Digital courses and is a project developer at Eindhoven University of Technology.

EIT Digital's Coursera platform is in use at more than 140 institutes, including Stanford University, Princeton University, Eindhoven University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Sapienza University of Rome, University of London, and Lund University in Sweden.

Eastablished courses offered by EIT Digital also include:

Development of Real Time Systems;

Quantitative Formal Modeling

Worst Case Performance Analysis,

Software Architecture for the Internet of Things.

EIT Digital is headquartered in Brussels with regional offices in Berlin, Eindhoven, Helsinki, London, Paris, Stockholm, Trento, Budapest and Madrid.
