Honda wants to “read” driver’s emotions

Japanese carmaker Honda has announced a partnership with technology group Softbank in the area of Artificial Intelligence. The goal is developing a something called “Emotion Engine” – a technology that will allow cars to read driver’s emotions and act accordingly.

The technology will be based on Artificial Intelligence, processing the input from several cameras and other sensors. Through these channels, the device will gather information regarding the emotional state of the driver and enter into a dialogue with him. As a self-learning system, the technology will learn from joint experience with the driver and adapt to the person. News agency Reuters quotes Softbank CEO Masayoshi Sin saying that the Emotion Engine will be based on the company’s Pepper robot that also can read human emotions.

 

The joint project with Softbank is part of Honda’s Open Innovation Invites initiative designed to drive developments in the area of artificial intelligence. In this context, the carmaker has launched the Honda R&D Innovation Lab Toyo earlier this year.

 

Also Softbank is currently expanding its technological basis. As recently as past week, the company acquired British industrial icon ARM, one of the world’s most successful and influential microprocessor IP companies.
