Identifying UHF RFID tag design weaknesses

January 16, 2013 // By Myriam Massei
UHF RFID tags put on the market should all be compliant with the standard EPC gen 2. Nevertheless the performances can be very different from one tag to another. As an example, NRFLab did a benchmark of several tags which resulted in noticeable tag performance differences.

The lower performances of a tag can either restrict its use at shorter distances from a reader or require the use of a high quality detection and correction tag reader.

After reviewing various tags and reader architectures, we'll use the tags’ performance results obtained through testing and offer some solutions to improve the poor-performing tags.
