OLED microdisplays double up as eye trackers

The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP has integrated image sensing capabilities directly into its OLED microdisplays.

Smart glasses built with such bi-directional OLEDs could track the wearer's eye movements as they are recorded by the sensor for guidance and control functions.

The research institute will be showcasing a prototype at Augmented World Expo Europe (AWE) taking place in Berlin, October 18th – 19th.

Such bi-directional OLED microdisplays could support hands-free eye-controlled operation in augmented-reality applications sporting see-trough glasses. Fraunhofer FEP's current generation of colour bi-directional microdisplays offers SVGA resolution (800×600×RGBW), an image quality sufficient to find good use in AR.

Project partners Interactive Minds and Mecotec have developed application software for guide-by-eye control. The displays are available as part of various evaluation kits for industry partners to test out their own ideas.
