SEAT, Samsung, SAP join forces to develop next-gen connected car

Volkswagen subsidiary SEAT has entered into an alliance with Samsung Electronics and software maker SAP to develop future-oriented projects around the connected car. At the Mobile World in Barcelona, the trio showcased, among other projects, a solution that enables car drivers to find a parking space, make a reservation and pay the fees.

The goal of the alliance is developing connecting the driver while underway in a secure manner. Some of these solutions will be based on the Samsung Pay Platform. After the successful introduction of this platform in South Korea and the U.S., Samsung plans to roll out its secure mobile payment system in Europa within the next months. The German software company is contributing its SAP Vehicles Network (SVN) that has been launched in Q4/2015 in the U.S and Europe with Samsung as partner. The focus in this case is on vehicle-based services such as connected parking and fuelling.

Against this background, the three companies have devised a prototype that can be launched in SEAT’s ConnectApp. The app is intended to enable users to make a reservation to a parking space while en route, authenticate the user through fingerprint recognition, navigate the driver to the parking space and automatically open the entry barrier as soon as the vehicle is approaching. When leaving the car park, the driver can pay the parking fee through the app without having to leave the car.

Another project introduced by SEAT, Samsung and SAP is the virtual key – similar to the one Volvo recently introduced. The version demonstrated at the MWC in Barcelona has a relatively restricted functionality: It allows users to lock or unlock the doors, operate the windows and turn on the air conditioning remotely through a smartphone app. The carmaker plans to extend this functionality in much the same way as has been highlighted by Volvo – creating “digital” keys that can be transferred to other persons to authorise them to drive the car permanently or temporarily. The app will also contain the functions to establish a key administration and organisation facility. In the more distant future it will enable the administrator to define limits as to power, speed or driving modus of the user authorised through the virtual key.
